MASVINGO – It was horror for Grade 1 pupils at Zishumbe Primary School under Chief Chikwanda’s area to watch as their classmate Peace Murwira was struck and killed by a pirate taxi popularly known as mushikashika as they tried to cross Masvingo – Mutare Highway yesterday afternoon.
Police spokesperson, Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa could not confirm the accident that happened at 32km peg to The Mirror as he was out of office at the time of writing the story.
Zishumbe head Hativatyi Chirara confirmed the incident and said that the area is a black spot with four pupils having been struck by cars since 2020. Two of those including Peace died on the spot and the other child who was killed in February 2021 was thrown into a tree by the car that struck him, said Chirara
The other two children suffered severe injuries including breaking their limbs.
Zishumbe is dangerously located close to the busy highway with the classrooms about 100 metres away.
Taurai Mukuruva the driver of the mushikashika told The Mirror that he was trying to avoid a lorry that had strayed into his lane when he hit the child who was on the side of the road.
“I did not see the deceased who was trying to cross the road. All I heard was this huge bang,” said Mukuruva.
Onlookers said the car was speeding.
Parents called for road signs along the stretch of the road to avoid unnecessary loss of life. They also suggested humps.https://masvingomirror.com
