Chivi – Mbuya Tsvakai Mashamhanda (nee Charumbira), the mother of prominent Harare businessman Alex Mashamhanda of Mushwedwe Holdings has succumbed to Covid19 related complications.
She died at Montague Hospital in Harare at 1pm on Monday and she will be buried Mashamhanda Village under headman Jaka in Chivi on Saturday morning.
Mashamhanda confirmed the death in an interview with The Mirror.
Tragedy hit the Mashamhanda family on Monday when Mashamhanda’s driver Edwin Matemba died of Covid 19 in the morning and Mbuya Mashamhanda (94) who was staying at the village in Chivi followed a few hours later at 1pm. Matemba was buried in Wedza yesterday.
More than 50 people in Mashamhanda Village were tested by medics sponsored by Mashamhanda and 17 of them were positive to Covid-19. Mashamhanda Village has 56 households and an estimated population of 230. It is home to Murowa Diamond exploration activities and the thriving Sese Business Center.
Mbuya Mashamhanda was born in Chief Charumbira’s area and she married the late Mashamhanda Hwede in 1944. Her husband Hwede was a trader.
Mashamhanda described his late mother as a generous woman who was down to earth.
“She was down to earth but firm when it came to discipline. She however, would not scream at you. She always encouraged me to give to others and would make commitments in the village and at churches on my behalf. Many people found employment in my company through her,” said Mashamhanda.
Mbuya Mashamhanda was blessed with nine children, 31 grandchildren, 66 great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild which means she saw five generations.
