GZU student crowned Miss Lake October

MASVINGO –Shekinah Mandeya (20), a Marketing Management student at Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) has been crowned the inaugural Miss Lake October.

Shekinah was adjudged the best of 10 models who contested for the title at Hippo Creek Lodge at the shore of Lake Mtirikwi some 24km out of Masvingo along Mutare road on Saturday evening. 

Chief Coordinator of Miss Lake October, Faith Mazana said Shekinah was adjudged the best because she did a proper ramp walk, chose fitting and appropriate clothing and creativity in answering questions.

Marvelous Ganje (24) was voted first princess, Tecla Mudavanhu (25) second princess and Respina Anotida (20) miss personality.

Shekinah walked away with US$200, Marvelous US$150, Tecla US$100 and Respina US$50. 

The pageant was held under the theme; Celebrating Our Culture and Beauty.  

“This is my first modelling contest and I am glad that I was crowned queen. I am a creative thinker and passionate about everything that I do. I hope to support the girl child through different initiatives that I will embark on,” said Shekinah.

Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) Vice Chancellor Professor Rungano Zvobgo was the guest of honor and he urged young women to be seek empowerment through education.

“I wish I could still enjoy my youth and dance as you are doing. I am past that stage now. Young women should empower themselves through education. That is the only way to go. I am happy that our young women are free and enjoying themselves. This is a sign of freedom,” said Zvobgo.

The winners were chosen by a three member panelist comprising of Patience Nyathi the director of Heavenly Cinema and Royal Evolve, Innocent Munaye a board member of Miss Tourism Zimbabwe and Charles Austin Theatre chairperson and broadcast personality Tavitha Mpala

The Lake October festival is a brain child of Garikai Garande who operates Caravan Park, Masvingo. The festival also has two slated for next week Friday and Saturday that will see Winky D, Jah Prayzah, Feli Nandi, Takura, Voltz Jt, and Freeman among other taking to stage.

The modelling contest was sponsored by Hippo Creek, Caravan Park Masvingo and Marisa Worldwide. Absolute Security, Booties Pharmacy, Sibbs Logistics, Visionary Liquor store, and Royal Evolve exhibited at the event.
