MASHAVA – The Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) graduation ceremony that sparked controversy last month after the eviction of over 40 former Shabanie-Mashava Mine (SMM) workers in preparation for the event has been moved back to the main campus amid security concerns. The ceremony which is slated for next month will be graced by President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Sources privy to the security details said after an assessment by the security team from the President’s office it was recommended that the event be taken back to the main campus.
The source further told The Mirror that the cautious team still grappling with the recent presidential plane crush discovered that Gaths Mine stadium where the ceremony was supposed to take place is tucked in a mountainous area and has one entrance also used as the exit posing serious security threats to the President.
GZU spokesperson Anderson Chipatiso neither confirmed nor denied the new development, but said he will have a final comment on Monday. “We are going to have a meeting on Monday , so that we can finalise. You can call me on Monday. I will be able to give you the correct position,” said Chipatiso.
