Gweru man killed in hit-and-run accident

GWERU–A Gweru man died on the spot after he was struck by an unknown vehicle on Saturday at the 274 km peg along the Bulawayo-Harare Highway near Gweru River.
Midlands Police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed that Gerald Vanheerde (37) died after he was hit at around 1 am.
Mahoko also confirmed a separate incident where two men are battling for life at Zvishavane District Hospital after a bus rammed into a Toyota Hilux vehicle they were attending to leaving them with severe injuries.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirms investigating a case of a fatal road accident where one person died on the spot after being hit by a motor vehicle along the Harare-Bulawayo Highway on Saturday 04 March at around 0100hrs.
“It is alleged that, an unknown motor vehicle hit the pedestrian at approximately the 274 km peg near Gweru River and the pedestrian died on the spot whilst the offending motor vehicle driver did not stop,” said Mahoko.
He also appealed to members of the public who might have information about the hit and run accident to assist Police with information by reporting at their nearest Police station.
Inspector Mahoko urged motorists and pedestrians to exercise caution at all times on the road.
In a separate incident, two men are battling for life at Zvishavane District Hospital after a bus rammed into a Toyota Hilux vehicle they were fixing leaving them with severe injuries.
Mahoko said the incident happened on Saturday around 11 pm along the Masvingo-Mbalabala Highway.
He said the two men parked the vehicle off the road and as they were attending to it, a red and white AVM bus which had no passengers on board was being driven by, Shelton Madzvamuse, rammed into the Toyota Hilux which then hit the two men. They were taken to Zvishavane District Hospital where they are currently receiving treatment.
“We urge members of the public to observe all rules and regulations of road and desist from travelling at night whenever there is an option to travel earlier,” said Mahoko.
