Gweru–Talk of the idiom, dig your own grave and it literally comes true!

A Gweru City Council grave digger, Lameck Sibanda was knocked down and killed by a car while coming from work last Saturday and chances are that he was buried at Matinunura Cemetery in a grave that he himself dug.
Sibanda’s relatives are however, angry after Council made them pay $1, 096 for the grave.

Ivene Banda, a family spokesperson argued that as someone who worked as a grave digger for council for 12 years and chances are that he dug his own grave; the local authority should have exempted Sibanda from paying for the grave as one of his work-related benefits.

The relatives also complained that Sibanda’s funeral policy was in arrears because Council deducted but did not forward his subscriptions. The family paid $748 as top-up.

Approached for comment, Gweru Mayor Josiah Makombe said that he had no information on burial arrangements made and could not therefore comment. He however, passed his condolences to the family.

Sources told The Mirror that Sibanda was knocked down by a car driven by an unlicensed lady whose lover was giving her driving lessons. The accident happened in Mkoba 13 when the deceased was walking back from work.
The injured Sibanda arrived at Gweru Provincial Hospital at 5pm and died at 8pm after failing to get medical attention.
