Gweru cop jailed 20 years for killing suspected robber

GWERU – A Gweru Police officer who shot and killed a suspected armed robber has been jailed 20 years for murder.
Mitch Tafirenyika (29) was sentenced by High Court Judge, Justice Ngoni Nduna at the Circuit High Court for Gweru last Friday.
Tafirenyika was stationed at Gweru Central Police Station.
It was the State case that Tafirenyika was part of a Police unit assigned to apprehend two suspected armed robbers, Doubt Munsaka and Tichaona Muzhanduki at Radway Farm last year.
Upon the unit’s arrival at the farm, the officers divided themselves into groups and surrounded the farm house. Tafirenyika and another officer were armed with rifles.
They knocked on the door and identified themselves. Muzhanduki opened the door and Tafirenyika discharged his firearm multiple times shooting him in the chest and arms.
Muzhanduki died on the spot and Tafirenyika was arrested afterwards.
