GWERU – Gweru City Council is in a dire financial position;

saddled with a ZWL$240 million debt and having exhausted 70% of its 2022 financial budget within just the first six months.

This was revealed by the local authority’s assistant finance manager Owen Masimba at a breakfast meeting hosted by Gweru Residents and Ratepayers Association on Thursday last week.

Masimba attributed the exhaustion of the budget to rising inflation and said that the budget will be used up before September.

The local authority’s three major creditors are the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra), Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (Zetdc) and the Local Authorities Pension Fund (LAPF).

“We are currently in a very huge revenue deficit and this is accumulating every day as expenditure outstrips inflows,” he said.

Two months ago, the local authority embarked on a number of debt recovery measures including litigation against defaulting ratepayers. This saw some residents having their properties attached by the Messenger of Court. https://masvingomirror.com
