GWERU – ZEC has set Saturday December 3 2022 as the day for by-elections to replace three Gweru councillors recently recalled by the Douglas Mwonzora led MDC-T.

The three recalled are Martin Chivhoko of Ward 4, Cleopas Shiri of Ward 5 and John Manyundwa of Ward 6.

Zimbabwe Electoral Commission Spokesperson Jasper Mangwana confirmed the development to The Mirror in an interview.

“The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission fixed Saturday December 3 as the day on which a poll shall take place when it becomes necessary in terms of Section 125 (4) (b) of the Electoral Act.

“The nomination court shall sit on Thursday 3 November from 10 am to 4 pm at the offices of the Town clerk for the purpose of receiving nominations of candidates for election as councillors for the vacant wards, “he said.

Meanwhile, ZEC has suspended by-elections with effect from November 1,2022 pending 2023 general polls.

Zimbabwe is expected to hold general elections between the month of July and August next year.

The country held its last general election on July 31, 2018, with President Mnangagwa taking the oath of office on August 26, two days after the Constitutional Court has ruled in favour of the Zanu-PF leader in a presidential result challenge by the opposition leader Nelson Chamisa.
