Masvingo Rural – Village head Christine Rukwava of Rukwava Village in Sanangwe near Mazare is counting her losses after several hundreds of US$ worth of property was gutted down by fire over unfair distribution of fertiliser and maize seed distributed under the Presidential Inputs Scheme.
The incident happened on November 13 following heated arguments after some villagers failed to get inputs.
Rukwava who has since reported the incident to Police confirmed the incident to The Mirror and identified the alleged arsonist as Melania Manda.
Asked for comment Manda said her hands were clean. She said that there were many people who were angry with the unfair distribution and politicisation of inputs and pointing a finger at her without evidence was wrong.
Minister of State in the Office of the President and MP for the area, Davis Marapira accused village heads in the Sanangwe area of unfair distribution of inputs and vowed to deal with those abusing Presidential scheme.
“Village heads did not distribute inputs fairly among their subjects. I am going to look into the matter and stern measures will be taken against the culprits. I am going to order an audit of the inputs distributed in that area.
“They were given 300 bags of maize seed and fertilizers and things don’t seem to tally here. I won’t let such issues go unpunished,” said Marapira.
“My hut was torched and I have reported the matter with Police at the Famers Hall. My first suspect is Manda because she complained bitterly after failing to get inputs. She warned that those who got inputs will get them burnt,” said Rukwava.
“Yes, she reported me to the Police but she has no evidence,” said Manda.
