MASVINGO – Gutu Rural District Council (RDC) is allegedly neglecting to pay a contractor who constructed Dambara Clinic in the Nyazvidzi area, its three staff houses and four septic tanks in 2001.
Thompson Magariro Munemero told The Mirror that he has not received a cent of the then agreed $95 000. He said he ended up selling his three beasts to pay off builders he had hired for the job. He signed the contract with the then Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Francis Mukaro.
“I was contracted by Gutu Rural District Council in 2000 to construct Dambara Clinic. We completed the project after a year. Council had promised to pay me after the project completion.
“Our contract stipulated that after the completion of the clinic council would pay us $95 000 and nothing was paid to us. The clinic has been operational since 2001. After sometime without being paid some contractors began harassing me and I sold off three beasts top pay them,” he said.
He added that current CEO Alexander Mtembwa said council can afford to pay him US$3 000. Mtembwa said they told Munemero to bring his paperwork so that the matter can be brought to finality.
“Yes we received the matter. I wasn’t in Gutu when the clinic was built. We told him to come with supporting documents that prove that he was contracted by council to build the clinic and we are still waiting for the documents,” he said.
