Gutu Police disrupts youth leadership workshop

MASVINGO – Gutu Police Officer in Charge, Cames Muyambo disrupted a Women’s Academy for Leadership and Political Excellence (WALPE) youth leadership workshop on Friday forcing the event to end prematurely.
WALPE financed the workshop facilitated by Gutu United Residents and Ratepayers Association (GURRA).
GURRA secretary general, Tafunga Mamombe confirmed the matter to The Mirror.
He said they suspect that Muyambo succumbed to political pressure from Zanu PF Masvingo Province secretary for commissariat, Brian Munyoro who stays near the workshop venue.
“We did everything by the book. There was no need to get Police clearance for the workshop and we always seek their clearance when we hold events that require us to do so. We suspect that Muyambo succumbed to pressure from Zanu PF provincial commissar Brian Munyoro who stays next to the lodge.
“After ordering us to disperse, we requested for time to give the youth food and certificates and they allowed us to do that. Had the workshop been illegal, there was no way Police would have allowed us to wrap up,” he said.
Masvingo Police Spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa said he was yet to receive the matter when contacted for a comment.
Munyoro did not respond to calls when contacted for a comment.
Mamombe added that officers from the CID section first interrogated them and left before Muyambo arrived with eight armed officers an hour later. He interrogated us in a separate room and kept making phone calls before ordering us to disperse, he said.
“We invited two youth, a male and a female from each of the 41 wards in Gutu and 33 individuals were able to attend. We have youth committees in every ward and that is where the youth where selected from. Our plan was to invite the remaining 49 youth in groups but it will be difficult after what transpired on Friday,” he added.
