CHIKOMBA—The government has plans to establish more secondary schools in the transit town of Chivhu which currently has one secondary school, District Schools Inspector (DSI) Emmanuel Kwenda has said.
He told The Mirror in an interview that his office will engage relative stakeholders such as the local authority and other Government departments for the establishment of a school.
Liebenberg High School built in 1898 by a Dutch Missionary Jacobus Liebenberg remains the only secondary school in Chivhu.
“Plans to hold a meeting to come up with a way forward for the establishment of another secondary school in Chivhu are afoot,” said Kwenda.
His sentiments come at a time when private schools are sprouting in the town that has experienced a population boom in recent years. Some of the private schools that have open doors to Chivhu learners include Elite Learning, Greater Heights, Crawford and Herentials Group of Colleges which has premises a few metres from Liebenberg.
Liebenberg High currently has an enrolment of 1600 students and each class has an average of 55 pupils with eight classes per stream.
School head Tinashe Sangu said the school’s social services are congested and has a shortage of toilets and furniture.
