Gokwe South RDC procures US$401k borehole rig

Gokwe South – In a move meant to enhance development, Gokwe South Rural District Council (RDC) has acquired a US$401 000 borehole drilling rig which will this year alone sink 34 solar boreholes in the district’s 33 wards.
The borehole rig which was purchased using devolution funds was commissioned on Monday. In addition to council projects, the rig will also be hired out for private work.
Gokwe RDC Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Jabulani Gute told The Mirror that the emphasis of the current borehole project is on supporting nutritional gardens in the face of the El-Nino induced drought.
“We purchased the rig at a cost of US$401 000 and these funds were from the 2022 devolution allocation. We commissioned the drill on Monday in Mapfungautsi Ward 24 where we drilled a borehole.
“We need to drill a total of 34 boreholes in our 2024 budget that will cover all the 33 wards. “The rig will also increase revenue inflows by hiring it out and the proceeds will be invested into our council water provision projects instead of using revenue from rates,” said Gute.
Working together with communities Council has already put in place a security system to protect the solar power equipment at boreholes against vandalism.
