Gokwe granny (67) jailed 9 years for ivory

KWEKWE – Magistrate Grace Tupiri has slapped an elderly Gokwe woman with the mandatory nine year jail term after she was found in possession of seven pieces of ivory valued at US$5 236.
Francisca Hapazari (67) of Maringa Village, Chitekete in Gokwe was arrested on April 4, 2024 at her homestead after Police and Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Authority (ZimParks) received a tipoff that she was selling ivory.
Prosecutor Farai Kwatireni told the court that Hapazari was found holding a sack with seven pieces of ivory that weighed 32.2 kg.
She was arrested and implicated Nomatter Hapazari who was also arrested but later defaulted court.
The ivory was produced as exhibit in court.
