MIRROR REPORTER

MASVINGO – Gokomere High, a brand synonymous with the best education in the country ever since, seems to be losing its luster year after year as the Roman Catholic-run school falls from its perch.

Gokomere which remained at the top in Masvingo Province for as long as one cares to remember is now even finding it difficult to compete with sister Catholic Schools.

Gokomere sits at number 5 in the November 2023 Zimsec A Level Exams if the Roman Catholic-run schools are ranked according to overall pass rates.

The results were supplied by the Education Secretary, Fr Samson Mutsvanga.

At number one is Silveira with 100% pass rate for its 116 candidates. Silveira also has the highest number of candidates at 65 with 15 points and above. It has the best student in the province Cardette Dhliwayo with 6 straight As’ (30 points), an achievement only replicated at Pamushana High.

Silveira had 100% pass rate last year and was at 99.1 in 2021. The head at Silveira is Stanley Mutsambiwa.

Mukaro High sits at number two with 100% pass rate and it has 41 students with 15 points and above. The highest students have 20 points each and they are found in all three areas, science, commercials and arts.

Mukaro maintained 100% pass rate since 2021. The head at Mukaro High is Marjorie Marumanadzo.

Berejena sits at number 4 with a pass rate of 96, 3% and it has six out of 54 students with 15 points and above. The head at Berejena is George Gopo.

Of the large mission schools, Gokomere sits at number 5 with an overall pass rate of 94,8% and 16 of its 96 candidates got 15 points and above. Gokomere has not managed 100% pass rate since 2021. The best student at Gokomere has 19 points and this is much lower than what Silveira and Pamushana achieved.
