MUTARE – The Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) has dispelled rumors of maize meal shortages in Manicaland after weeks of supply falling short of demand.

The association held a media tour of maize meal wholesalers and retailers in the province early this week to assess stocks and production capacities.

GMAZ chairperson, Tafadzwa Musarara told Chipinge Times during the tour that the province requires 400 tonnes of maize meal per week and GMAZ is currently able to supply 1 290 tonnes per week.

“We started having supply gaps soon after Christmas and this has been rectified. We are supplying the market threefold than demand. There has been an infiltration of illegal imports and we are now calling on Government to investigate. The country is secure in terms of maize-meal supplies. We contracted farmers to farm 50 000 hectares of maize,” he said.
