MASVINGO – Green Light International Trust (GLIT) last Saturday donated 46 mobility aids, clothes and food hampers to People with Disabilities (PWDs) and those living with albinism at Masvingo Civic Centre.
GLIT is a non-profit capacity development organisation for People with Disabilities, the less privileged and the vulnerable.
The event dubbed Bringing a Smile was held under theme: Enhancing Social Justice, For Persons with disabilities and the Marginalized. It was attended by PWDs drawn from all seven districts in the province.
GLIT Managing Director Tawanda Makwiramuti told The Mirror that they donated mobility aids as wheelchairs, white cans and crutches. He said they donate in the first quarter annually.
He said that they openly invited all PWDs from across the province. Makwiramiti founded GLIT in 2005 in 2005, in Kambuzuma, Harare. The organisation has spread throughout Africa and is assisting PWDs in South Africa, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and Burundi.
“We have donated over 2800 mobility aids to PWDs since 2012. We want to assist PWDs, the vulnerable and less privileged in Africa,” he said.
Regional Representative for National Association for the Societies of Care of the Handicapped Purazeni Jakata said PWDs applauded GLIT as it free donated mobility aids which are out of the reach of many PWDs.
“We are happy that a big organization like GLIT has remembered us and I am happy that people came in numbers. We appreciate them for helping us with crutches, hampers and wheelchairs for free,” he said.
