MASVINGO-Chiredzi gospel sensation, Shepherd Gama popularly known as Mr. Wezhira has called on promoters and corporates to give artists equal opportunities.
Gama said it is disheartening that corporates and Government departments’ contract artists from Harare to perform at functions in Masvingo where as there are hundreds of ‘equally good’ artists in the province who have a huge following.
“Equal opportunities must be given to artists regardless of whether they are from a small town or big town. Local acts should be included in line ups for local events as they connect well with the fans,” said Mr. Wezhira.
Gama said only a few artists are receiving opportunities to perform at events that can propel them to stardom and paying gigs.
“Artists are struggling and we need to have side hustles despite giving our all in music. I don’t give up music because my fans motivate me. Local artists are receiving limited airplay and their music only circulates on WhatsApp groups. Some of our fans are not even on social media,” added Gama.
Gama was born on August 1, 1988 and has been in the music industry since 2010 with three albums to his name. He also owns a jewelry shop in Chiredzi and hires out music instruments to earn a living.
