Girl with disability becomes junior councilor

CHIREDZI – Tariro Shoko, a 16 year old Ward 7 junior councillor is the first councillor in Chiredzi with a disability and her ambition is to become an engineer.
Shoko has a right leg impairment that she had from birth.
She told The Mirror in an interview that her hope is to become an Engineer. She said her experience daily is that communities look down on People Living with Disabilities (PLWDs).
“I have never come across a female with a disability who is an engineer so my dream is to become an engineer one day. I want to break this glass ceiling and be a shining example to other girls with disabilities,” said Shoko.
Shoko went to Tshovani Primary School and she is currently in Form 4 at Chiredzi Government High School.
She was elected into office in 2022 and she said she is working tirelessly to change lives especially of those young people with a disability in her ward.
” Lately I have been identifying young people in my ward who have disabilities and I have been encouraging them so that they understand that disability is not inability.
