CHIVI – A three-year-old girl from Marufu Village, Headman Musvuugwa under Chief Chivi slipped into Mushambigwe River and drowned last Saturday.

There seems to be an upsurge in reports of drownings in recent months.

Masvingo Police spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa confirmed the death of Mitchel Nyoni and urged members of the public to always keep an eye on children. 

The incident happened on Saturday at around 3 pm when Mitchel was at home with her mother, Esnath Marufu (27). She started playing with two other girls aged three and four and they left home towards Mushambigwe River, 100 metres away unnoticed.

Marufu heard a child scream from the river and discovered that her daughter was missing. She alerted the child’s uncle, Pedzisai Simba and the body was retrieved.

Postmortem was waived by Chivi Magistrate, Rutendo Mujakati.
