Masvingo – Friends of the Environment who are walking 105km to create awareness on environmental issues have today covered 46km from Masvingo to Roy (Zaka turnoff) along Masvingo-Mutare Highway as they journey towards their destination at Nyika Growth Point.
Tomorrow they will start off at Roy and do the last 45km to Gwindingwi High School at Nyika in Bikita where the Minister of State for Masvingo is expected to be the guest of honour at the commissioning and official opening of a nursery at the school.
Yesterday the walkathons did 15km from Gokomere High to Masvingo after they planted some trees at the school.
Friends of the Environment chairman, Tendai Gwatiringa expressed satisfaction at the progress made by the walkathons so far. He said the walkathon is a way of creating awareness on environmental issues and this happens as the participants walk and meet people along the road and the communities they pass through.
The walkathon planted trees at Gokomere High, at Mutimurefu Prison, Zishumbe Primary School and tomorrow they will plant trees at Pamushana High School and Bikita Fashu.
“Schools are very important in this campaign and in the networking process. For example we planted trees at Gokomere and it means we reached out to hundreds of children who in turn will get the message to more people,” said Gwatiringa.
He thanked the sponsors of the walkathon who he said have always made the event possible. This year’s main sponsor is Bain, said Gwatiringa.
