MVUMA- Magistrate Ayah Kagwere has sentenced four Mvuma men to at least 18 months each in jail for defrauding a Gweru businessperson of US$17 000 in a land sale deal.
Silvester Chiurunga (61) was slapped with an 18 months jail term, Bernard Hlongwani (37) 20 months, Lovemore Mudondo (63) 18 months and Misheck Muromo (45) to 22 months in prison.
They were convicted of defrauding Whitewaters Drillers director Gilbert Baron (57) of US$ 17 000
Magistrate Kagwere suspended 12 months from each of them on condition that they each restitute Baron US$4 250 by June 30, 2023.
Circumstances are that the four men sold Baron a 100-hectare piece of land at plot number 458 Central Estates in Mvuma, which belongs to Nyasha Magadza.
They charged him US$42 600 for the plot and irrigation equipment.
Baron made several payments for the plot amounting to US$17 000 between June and September 2022.
The four misrepresented themselves as a headman, a lands officer, war veterans Welfare Officer and a brother to the late owner of the plot.
Sometime in September 2022, the plot owner, Magadza, phoned Baron, who was now developing the plot and informed him that she owned the land.
Baron tried to recover his money from the four men and filed a Police report.
Tafadzwa Zulu prosecuted.
