Former Gweru town clerk in US$120 000 fraud

Gweru – Former Gweru City Council Town Clerk Daniel Matawu is facing US$120 000 fraud charges involving the alleged illegal sale of stands.
Matawu was arrested by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission.
He recently appeared in court and was remanded out of custody to October 1, 2021 on RTGS$10 000 bail.
Matawu was fired from the City Council in 2016 after he was found guilty of 15 counts of gross incompetence.
It is the State case that sometime in 2014, Matawu in his capacity as town clerk created and supervised the sale of 24 stands from reserved public open space in Senga.
It is alleged that Matawu did not follow the required procedure which was to seek permission from the Minister of Local Government.
The stands were sold on first come first service basis for US$5 092 each.
