Fatima High dominates Kwekwe Mayor Tourney

KWEKWE – Fatima High School is the overall winner of the inaugural Kwekwe Mayor Challenge Cup held last Saturday at Mbizo Stadium after scooping gold in all categories.
The school scooped gold in soccer and netball and received a trophy, soccer and netball kits, balls and medals from Kwekwe Mayor. Albert Zinhanga who sponsored the event.
The inaugural tournament featured 14 high schools drawn from across Kwekwe.
Fatima High soccer team goalkeeper Hassan Phiri was voted the best goalkeeper while Sibongile Mhlope was adjudged the best netball player.
Batanai High School from Redcliff came second followed by Manunure High School from Mbizo with Munyati High on fourth position.
The tournament ran under the theme: Say no to drugs.
Fatima high headmaster James Mapfumo said he was excited after scooping all accolades.
“My teams came to this tournament as underdogs but we kept motivating them and instilling the never die attitude in them. We defeated other teams that we thought were formidable as Manunure. Thumps up to our soccer and netball coaches Matsoka Fundo and Xelisile Moyo respectively for their efforts and bagging the accolades,” he said.
Zinhanga said the Mayor’s cup is meant to promote a healthy lifestyle among pupils and urge them to desist from drug and substance abuse.
He added that the event will rope in primary schools from next year’s edition.
“This is going to be an annual event and from next year we will have primary schools on board. The aim is to promote a healthy lifestyle amongst our children and have them join the fight against drug and substance abuse,” he said.
