MASVINGO – Angry relatives of a man allegedly murdered by a Nekanda businessman and his brother last month took the body straight from Masvingo Hospital mortuary to the latter’s shop, placed the coffin on the counter and demonstrated as they sang, danced and called for the deceased’s avenging spirit.

The Shop is at Nekanda Business Center in Muchakata.

After the demonstration which happened in the early morning of January 16, 2023, the relatives took Tawonga Chikomo (43)’s body to businessman Nyasha Machaya’s rural village at Mamoti where they placed the coffin in the yard and again started singing and dancing.

The deceased’as uncle, Moses Hweshure confirmed the demonstrations to The Mirror.

The relatives later took Chikomo’s body for burial at Chikomo Village under Chief Shumba in Masvingo Rural.

The other accused brother is Thomas Machaya (34).

Villagers who talked to The Mirror soon after the murder alleged that Police was unlikely to arrest Nyasha because he was well connected.

Police has since arrested the brother but the businessman is said to have escaped to South Africa. Mirror Editor Garikai Mafirakureva was arrested for publishing the villagers’ skepticism but Police later dropped the charges.

Masvingo Police Spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa confirmed that Nyasha was still at large.

Sources said that Chikomo was stabbed with a knife by Thomas on January 14, 2023 and the businessman joined in by hitting the now deceased with a log.
