Masvingo – The Environmental Management Agency (EMA) issued an order three days ago for Masvingo City Council to urgently attend to a severe sewer burst near Rujeko running into Mucheke River.
A statement released by EMA said the District Environmental Officer (DEO), Uriga Celestino came across the sewer burst on Monday during routine inspections and invited the City engineer to the site.

The statement said the discharge was due to a deliberate blockage of a manhole near at House Number 3808 Mukute Close-Rujeko A. The six-meter deep manhole was vandalized and blocked with stones of an average weight of 35kgs and Masvingo City Council was ordered to immediately attend to the blocked manhole to ensure stoppage of the discharge into the environment.
EMA says in the statement that it went back to inspect the spillage on Tuesday and is satisfied that the City Council has attended to the problem and stopped the bursts.

“As EMA we strongly advise and urge the residents to desist from vandalizing the sewer reticulation infrastructure as the vandalism can lead to environmental pollution as was noted in Rujeko. Let us all uphold our rights to leave in a clean, safe and healthy environment by reporting residents who vandalize such infrastructure to the relevant authorities,” said the EMA statement.
