BUHERA – The Environmental Management Agency (EMA) has embarked on a drive to conscientize traditional leaders and their communities about the dangers of veld fires.
They are being encouraged to create fireguards around their homesteads, gardens and schools.
EMA Buhera District Environmental Officer Severino Kangara told the Mirror that his office is conducting educational meetings with villagers mostly in communities that fall under climatic region 3 as they are prone to veld fires.
“The areas prone to veld fires in Buhera are Ward 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. As EMA, we are having meetings with traditional leaders and their communities educating them on dangers of veld fires and precaution measures in case there is a veld fire,” said Kangara.
He also said that the educational campaigns will also be done in schools as children have the tendency of playing with fire.
