MUTARE – President Emmerson Mnangagwa has donated 10 wheelchairs to Manicaland.
The wheel chairs for Manicaland were handed over last Friday at Manica Skyview Centre during the Zimbabwe National Disability Expo.
The Expo is meant to give an opportunity to people living with disabilities to showcase their talents.
Special Advisor on national disability issues in the Office of the President, Joshua Teke Malinga, who was represented by, Makion Chirinzepi, said of the wheelchairs donated by the President last year, and eight provinces had already benefited.
He said the donation of the wheelchairs was a step in the right direction as the nation envisages to move away from the charity model of disability to social model in society.
“The purpose of the donation is that as we move away from the charity model of disability where we do not encourage sympathy but empathy, we are also empowering people living with disabilities to stand on their own.
“We are moving away from retrogressive models like personal tragedy model, we are saying we need to give such kind of people the necessary support they need,” he added.
