Drunk man fails to wake up, killed in a hut inferno

KWEKWE – Two tragic fire incidents have been reported in the Midlands Province.
One man who was drunk in Mberengwa died in an inferno after unknown people set the house in which he and his father were sleeping. His father tried to wake him up but he failed.
In another incident in Mvuma, seven months baby was burnt to death in a hut while a neighbour managed to rescue the three-year-old brother on Saturday. Seven months, Delight Chiunde died after fire engulfed a hut where the baby was sleeping together with his three-year-old brother Talent Fero.
ZRP Midlands spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the incidents.
“This incident occurred on 11 May 2024 at around 5pm at Village 32, Chiwodza area in Mvuma,” said Inspector Mahoko.
On the fateful day, the mother of the children Delight Mapfumo (32) went to fetch water from a nearby well, leaving behind her two children sleeping in the hut.
On her return she found Erica Machisa (53) her neighbour trying to put out fire which had engulfed the hut. They only managed to rescue the 3 year old and toddler died. On Sunday at around 3am Maribha Village, Chief Mahlebadza, Mberengwa, Isaac Matsheza (71) was asleep in his hut with his son Tapiwa Matsheza (21) who had been drinking beer at Gaha Business Centre.
Later during the night unknown people set their thatched hut on fire and Isaac tried to alert his son but he failed to wake up. He escaped and Farai was trapped inside leading to his death.
Tapiwa’s body was ferried to Musume Mission Hospital mortuary whilst his father is currently admitted at Gwanda Provincial Hospital
