GWERU – Midlands Provincial Police Spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko is urging people not to attempt to cross flooded rivers.

He told The Mirror in an interview that two people including a six-year-old boy have drowned while attempting to cross flooded rivers in the Midlands.

“The onset of the rainy season comes with its joys and sorrows. Of major concern, and the most worrisome is the loss of lives through drowning. Water levels in rivers increase and children are tempted to swim. In this regard, we are experiencing an increase in deaths due to drowning since the onset of the 2023-2024 rain season.

“We would like to urge the public to avoid crossing flooded rivers. Instead, people must wait for the water to subside before attempting to cross. In addition, we discourage swimming in flooded pools and rivers by children,” he said.

He said that a Shurugwi man (38) died after he drowned as he attempted to cross a flooded river last Thursday. A six year-old Nembudziya boy drowned in a pool as he followed his older brother to the grazing lands.
