CHIVI–One person died, and seven others were injured in a four-vehicle pile-up accident at the 52km peg along the Masvingo-Beitbridge Highway near Sese Business Centre in Chivi around 3: 30 pm.
All four vehicles burst into flame and burnt to ashes. Two small vehicle passengers escaped unharmed.
According to National Police Spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi Toyota, a Toyota Fun Cargo vehicle stopped and reversed in the middle of the highway without signalling and caused a fatal accident where two haulage trucks collided.
Nyathi said the Fun Cargo, a haulage truck and the Toyota Premiera were driving towards Beitbridge while another haulage truck was driving towards Masvingo.
“The Fun Cargo suddenly stopped and began reversing in the middle of the road. The truck driver behind it switched lanes to avoid an accident. The driver, however, got into a head-on collision with a Masvingo-bound truck.
“The two trucks exploded on impact and burst into flames. The Toyota Premiera and Fun Cargo also caught fire and were burnt to ashes.
Nyathi said neither the owner, driver, nor passenger of the Fun Cargo, has been identified.
