Chivi dance group wins Chibuku NeShamwari

TRIANGLE-Jekerere Re Nyaningwe, a bira (ran making) dance group from Chivi, will represent Masvingo at the Chibuku NeShamwari traditional dance festival national competition after winning Saturday’s Provincial festival.
The group also walked away with the interbank equivalent of US$2 500.
Masvingo is also hosting the national competition set for August 5, 2023, at Mucheke Stadium. Winners will walk away with US$15 000, second-placed US$10 000, and third-placed US$7 500.
Chisa group from Chiredzi came second and received the interbank equivalent of US$1 500. The group performed the Jaka dance.
Masvingo’s Dare rimwe, which performed the Bira dance, came third and received US$1 000 at the interbank rate.
The remaining six groups received the interbank equivalent of US$500 for competing.
Delta Beverages sponsors the festival through its Chibuku brand. Zimbabwe National Traditional Dance Association (ZNTDA) and the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) coordinate the festival.
This year’s edition marks the sixtieth anniversary and is running under the theme; Bira Remadhanzi, 60 Years Sithokozisa Ngezomgido!
Jekerere Re Nyaningwe group leader Prince Mutsauki said his group is already preparing for the national competitions.
“We are a 15-member group formed in 2022. We gave a solid performance and are happy to have won the Provincial festival. “The team is already preparing for the national competitions, which are being held in our backyard. We want to raise Masvingo’s flag high,” said Mutsauki.
The country’s first traditional dance festival was launched in 1963. The first edition was held at Mai Musodzi Hall in Mbare, Harare.
Mutare-based group, Dapurahunanzva won the 2022 national festival.
