MVUMA– Chirumhanzu Rural District Council (CRDC) recently delivered 55 tonnes of wheat to the Grain Marketing Board (GMB) in Mvuma. The CRDC planted 26 hectares of winter wheat this season at its farm in Musena.
Chirumhazu RDC Agriculture and Natural Resources Officer, Leanias Matongo, confirmed the development to The Mirror and said the idea is to complement Government’s efforts in hunger reduction. He, however, bemoaned a huge loss of the crop to quelea birds and the early rains before harvest.
“We planted about 26 hectares of winter wheat this season at our farm in Musena and we managed to harvest 55 tonnes which we have already delivered to the GMB.
“The delivery is quite a commendable output as compared to the previous years. We were, however, affected by the rains during harvest time and we also had a challenge with birds but we managed to deal with them using traditional methods.
“In 2020, the same hectarage was planted and we managed to harvest 36 tonnes,”he said.
