CHIREDZI – Residents ofWard 3 in Chiredzi have sent a petition to acting town secretary, Wesley Kauma complaining against a bar in their area which they allege is closing after 10 pm thereby causing an upsurge in social ills like break-ins, child prostitution and public fighting.

They claimed that the bar’s licence does not allow it to extend its operations beyond 10 pm. The petition was signed by more than 200 residents who are demanding that Club 28 Bar be closed completely.

Kauma who was out of office for official bussiness said he was yet to receive official communication regarding the matter and promised to come back to The Mirror once he received the petition.

The proprietor of the bar Nyasha Khumbula said he has the licence to operate as a nightclub and said it was politics.

“I have a licence to operate as a nightclub and people are using political background to attack me, they are not happy that i am in the presidential campaign team,”said Khumbula.

Chiredzi Town Council (CTC), Acting chairperson, Ropafadzo Makumire confirmed that the local authority is seized with the matter. He said council is also questioning the licensing of the bar and reiterated that there is an upsurge in crime since the opening of the bar early this year.

“We have to look deeper into the issue and see if the bar has proper papers. It is true that we have seen an upsurge in crime since the opening of this bar early this year,” said Makumire.

Chiredzi Police Chief Superitendent Robert Chihwereva said the bar operates according to its licence. He also said that crime in the area has nothing to do with the bar

“You are kindly requested by Chiredzi Urban ward 3 residents to take action against Club 28 which is located in our area,” read part of the petition.
