CHIREDZI – Chiredzi District has received 16 metric tonnes of molasses from the 80 metric tonnes that were donated to the seven districts of Masvingo Province by Tongaat Hulett.
The molasses is to be used to feed cattle and alleviate the dire effect of this year’s El Nino induced drought.
Molasses is a viscous byproduct obtained from the refining of sugarcane and can be used to enhance cattle feed.
Chiredzi District Agritex Officer (DAO), Tongayi Bodi confirmed the development to The Mirror and so far nine metric tonnes have been collected.
“Our district received 16 metric tonnes of molasses from the THZ donation to the province and we have so far collected nine metric tonnes,” said Bodi.
Distribution of the molasses has started. The criteria for sadist distribution is that farmers who own cattle, possess stock cards and are trained by the agricultural officers on how to use the molasses will be given.
“We have already started distributing the molasses, we use the criteria of identifying a farmer who owns cattle, who possesses a stock card and then receive training from agricultural officers on how to make cattle feed,” said Bodi.
Chiredzi Rural District Council (RDC), chairperson Aspect Mashingaidze who is one of the farmers who received the molasses applauded Tongaat for saving the country’s head.
“My ward (32) is one of those severely affected by drought and we appreciate this gesture from THZ,” said Mashingaidze.
Lydia Madhuveko another villager from ward 32 also echoed same sentiments citing that her cattle were at risk.
