CHIREDZI – A senior Zanu PF official presiding over the party’s district elections has called for the deployment of security to quell violence that has taken place at some polling stations in Chiredzi District.
One former councillor alleged massive rigging in the elections with some people voting several times in the elections.
The elections particularly in Ward 24C, Chiredzi North failed to take off after violence erupted. The elections are taking place ahead of provincial elections which have been postponed indefinitely.
Zaka Central MP Davison Svuure confirmed to the Mirror that elections failed in some parts due to violence.
“I can confirm that elections failed to take place in two consecutive days in Ward 24C because of violence. We need security to conduct the elections safely,” said Svuure.
Chiredzi District Coordinating Committee Chairperson Siyaki Mundungehama referred all the questions to Svuure.
Other affected polling places are centres in wards 6, 27 and 30A and reruns are expected at these centres.
“Elections were conducted at 47 centres in the district and we expect reruns in some of them,” said Svuure.
Former ward 3 councillor Tarusenga Makamba who lost the elections alleged that the process was marred by rigging.
“The elections were not fair, some people were voting many times and there also was a lot of vote buying,” said Makamba. https://masvingomirror.com
