CHIPINGE – Chipinge Town Council secretary James Mutemera has lauded residents for repairing the council’s heavily damaged roads.

His thank you message on social media though welcome appeared ironic to some as it is the sole and primary responsibility of the local authority to maintain the town’s roads.

The residents took to the task in their tens last week and brought their equipment as they repaired the road that links Usanga and St Kelvin suburbs which were destroyed by incessant rains.

Businessman Godwill Mlambo brought his 7-tonne truck to carry stones for fixing the road. Mlambo however, had no kind words for the local authority which he said is in the business of just collecting money from residents without providing services.

Mlambo said the exercise was meant to address the road damaged by rains last week.

“Council just collects revenue but there is nothing on the ground. We wonder what they use our devolution and ERRP funds for. In 2021 they delivered nothing except empty promises,” said Mlambo.

The Deputy Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Development Mike Madiro who toured Chipinge roads late last year admitted that the roads network had collapsed though he was quick to accuse Chipinge Town Councilors whom he said are from the opposition side and have failed to deliver.

“We thank you much as council,” wrote Mutemera.https://masvingomirror.com
