CHIPINGE TIMES REPORTER

CHIPINGE – Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Water and Fisheries, Dr Anxious Masuka has said that the Bwerudza Irrigation Scheme is set to receive a tractor from the Government.
He said this during his speech at the World Food Day commemorations at the scheme under Chief Mutema in Chipinge on Friday.
The international commemorations ran under the theme: Water is Life, Water is Food. Leave No One Behind.
Masuka said the 456 farmers in the 166-hectare irrigation scheme will also receive free inputs as they are hardworking and properly manage the scheme.
“Farming is a business. With that in mind, the 456 farmers must be shareholders and employ a full-time manager to manage the 166 hectares,” he said.
The commemorations were attended by several agricultural partners including the World Food Programme (WFP) and other Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs).
Scheme chairperson Michael Pindeni said a tractor would shift the scheme’s fortunes by improving production.
“The scheme began in 2005. Our average yields are impressive. If given a tractor, our production would improve. That would be commendable as draught power has always been a challenge,” he said.
Farmers at the scheme plant maize and sugar beans and receive an average yield of three tonnes per hectare.
