MASVINGO–The Delta Beverages-sponsored Chibuku NeShamwari traditional dance festival provincial competition will be held tomorrow at Chihambakwe Beerhall in Triangle.
Ten dance groups will compete for the prize money and a sole ticket to represent Masvingo Province at the national competitions.
The festival is coordinated by the Zimbabwe National Traditional Dance Association (ZNTDA) and the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ).
NACZ Masvingo Provincial Arts Manager Helen Mudefi confirmed the competition to The Mirror.
She said the competing groups are Jeketera Renyaningwe, Gudo Tashinga Dance, Kamba Dance Group, Chisa, Lundi, Dare rimwe dance group, Ivhu inhaka, Tagarira Dance group, Maombera endanga and Dzingisa Dance Group.
“All groups have confirmed that they are ready for the festival and will be out to win the golden ticket to the national competitions. We are also expecting the host community to attend the festival in numbers. Entrance is free,” said Mudefi.
This years’ edition marks the competition’s sixtieth anniversary and is running under the theme; Bira Remadhanzi, 60 Years Sithokozisa Ngezomgido!
The country’s biggest traditional dance festival was launched in 1963 with the first edition held at Mai Musodzi Hall in Mbare, Harare. Delta Beverages sponsors the festival through its Chibuku brand.
Mutare based group, Dapurahunanzva won the 2022 national festival. The festival returned last year after a two year COVID-19 induced hiatus.
The 2019 edition was won by Bulawayo’s dance ensemble Ezimnyama while Budiriro Arts from Mashonaland West was crowned first runners-up. Dedza Chitandizo of Harare as crowned second runners-up.
The 2018 edition was won by Guruve Marimba Dance group from Mashonaland Central. The group also won an exhibition trip to China courtesy of Delta Beverages and Dreamster.
This year’s national winners will walk away with US$15 000, second placed US$10 000 and third placed US$7 500.
The drinks giant also scouts and promotes talent through its Chibuku Road to Fame festival which has given rise to several artists including Masvingo’s own Munashe Zhira and Mokoomba group which has gone on to receive international acclaim
