BIKITA – Vengai Chapwanya has been appointed the new substantive Chief Mkanganwi replacing Govo Mkanganwi who died in 2013.
Ministry of Local Government and Public Works director of Communications, Gabriel Masvora confirmed the appointment to The Mirror.
Chapwanya will be installed on tomorrow at Vushe Primary School in Bikita.
The chieftainship lay vacant for 10 years as family squabbles took toll.
Retired Major General Gibson Mashingaidze also laid claim to the chieftainship.
Bikita District Development Coordinator (DDC) Bernad Hadzirabwi said the appointment was done after due constitutional consultations with the four families that have claim to the chieftainship.
“The President has appointed Vengai Chapwanya as the new substantive Chief Mkanganwi after consultations with the family and due processes were undertaken in accordance with the constitution,” Hadzirabwi said.
Chapwanya is from the Chiumburu family and the other houses Mushanduri, Funhiro and Pambwei families.
The Chiumburu family has four sub-families; Kufakunesu, Chapwanya, and Chiumburu and Ziso families.
The appointment comes after a long period of haggling as Retired Major General Gibson Mashingaidze who is also of the Chiumburu family claimed the right to the chieftainship.
Several consultative meetings were done by the Provincial Chiefs Assembly and one chaired Chief Nhema of Zaka recommended the appointment of Mashingaidze.
Charles Chapwanya a family member appealed against the decision as unprocedural and in defiance of the family’s culture leading to another selection process.
