MASVINGO – Gutu West CCC Parliamentary candidate for the Saturday by-election, Ephraim Morudu has appeared at Gutu Magistrates Court today charged with assaulting a Forever Associates Zimbabwe (FAZ) member.
Morudu who is a war veteran was charged four times and jailed on a number of occasions since he started campaigning for the seat in May this year. His case was postponed to November 20, 2023 because his lawyer, Derick Charamba lost his wife yesterday.
The State says Morudu who complained against harassment and victimisation by Zanu PF assaulted Arthur Mawuko on August 23, 2023 at Tungamirirai Primary School during polling for the harmonised elections.
Police however, only raised the case two weeks later.
The State alleges that Morudu disembarked from his vehicle alone and punched Mawuko once on the left and right shoulders without warning. The matter has been postponed thrice.
In a different case, Morudu was early this year charged for indecent assault on a female FAZ member. He was detained for two nights without trial at Gutu ZRP.
In that case the State said on June 2, 2023, Morudu allegedly fondled a FAZ member at Mbirikira Poling Station in Soti Source, Gutu West Ward 3.
The FAZ member had asked for his particulars and he questioned her powers and authority to demand those from him. The two got into a heated argument and the State says Morudu fondled the woman’s breasts and left the center.
ZEC yesterday declared Zanu PF candidate John Paradza the winner of the by-election which Morudu and two other contestants disputed. The three refused to sign election papers to acknowledge the results.
