GWERU – Top CCC candidate who vied for Chirumhanzu South Constituency, Patrick Cheza, was granted bail after spending three weeks in jail.
Cheza and four other party members were granted ZWL$500 000 bail by Masvingo High Court judge Garainesu Mawadze, recently.
Cheza and his colleagues were arrested on August 24, 2023, on allegations of assaulting his Zanu PF rival Barbra Rwodzi who has since been appointed Minister of Tourism and Hospitality.
Cheza is facing one count of inciting public violence while Elias Maduveko, Magmaster Chidyawuye, Delight Zinyemba and Courage Mugova are all facing public violence charges.
Cheza who is a leading CCC politician in the Midlands was arrested after he handed himself over to the Police following the arrest of his colleagues earlier in the day.
The assault allegations arose after Cheza and Rwodzi’s vehicles were involved in the same road traffic accident along Chaka-Charandura road in Chirumhanzu on August 24.

The rivals, who were not in their cars during the road mishap, soon met at the accident scene where a misunderstanding arose.
The State alleges Cheza incited his supporters to beat up Rwodzi.
Acting for in common purpose, the court heard that Chidyawuye tripped Rwodzi with his right foot at the same time trying to stab her in the face with a knife.
Other CCC supporters joined in and indiscriminately kicked her several times.
The accused are denying the charges and insist they are targets of systematic State persecution for belonging to the opposition.
The opposition party says party loyalists are being targeted and arrested.
