Caps stay grounded

Caps United are not getting carried away with last week’s battering of poor WhaWha which gave them their first Castle Lager Premier Soccer League victory of the season.

The Green Machine cruised to a 6-0 win at the National Sports Stadium in Harare, just days after they had been crushed 6-2 by Manica Diamonds.

While the win will give the players confidence going forward, captain Ronald “Rooney” Chitiyo has warned that they face tougher challenges ahead, particularly when they visit Bulawayo City tomorrow.

“Every game that we are involved with a smaller team will always prove to be a challenging one for us. This is because we are a big team which means we will be fighting to maintain our reputation whilst the opposing team will be highly-motivated,” Chitiyo told NewsDay Sport after yesterday’s training session.

“Bulawayo City are already in a position of advantage as the game is going to be held at their home ground. The win against WhaWha was a big one and really boosted our confidence. However Caps United is really a big team, therefore, that win alone is not enough we need consistency. Winning should not be a once off, but an everyday thing.”

Caps United coach Lloyd Chitembwe has boldly declared that his side will be fighting for honours despite a slow start caused by financial problems.

He will be hoping that his side can notch up another win so that they can keep on climbing up the log table.

Bulawayo City have already shown that they can be giant killers after they accounted for Highlanders two weeks ago.

Coach Philani  “Beef” Ncube has targeted another big scalp.

“For us to be considered to be Premier Soccer League players and coaches, we need to beat the so-called big teams and those with the good monies. We also want to be called the big teams. We also want to play and coach the teams with big monies, to do that, the best thing to do is to beat them,” Ncube said as he looks ahead to tomorrow’s contest.

He criticised people who have described Caps United as an old people’s home after the 2016 champions signed a number of players well into their 30s.

“Saying Caps United is an old people’s home is a statement from those that are not football people. It’s a statement from novices, but as a coach I know Caps United have got experience and that can come in handy for them, so we need not to worry about the ages of their players. It is their philosophy, it is what they want and their objectives. I would have loved to have old players, but we don’t have them and that is why we are going for juniors,” Ncube said.

He said his side will be wary of Caps United following their big win at the weekend.

“Caps United’s 6-0 win was no fluke. They worked for it. We are not worried about how they scored, we are worried about how we are going to manage our game and we are also hungry for the three points. We need to maximise on home advantage,” he said. Newsday.
