MUTARE-Mutare Business Community led by Esau Mupfumi has offered to renovate Sakubva Stadium which is suspended from hosting Premier Soccer League (PSL) games.
Mupfumi who is also a Zanu PF Central Committee member and Mutare Urban aspiring Member of Parliament told Chipinge Times on the sidelines of the Independence celebrations held at the stadium on Tuesday.
He said his the business community has already engaged Mutare City Council over the renovations in order for the stadium to host PSL games after it was suspended by the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) grounds inspection committee.
The 10 000 seater stadium was suspended at the beginning of March when the 2022-2023 PSL season began.
“We have already assured Mutare City Council that we are prepared to meet the costs of the requirements made by ZIFA to return football matches to Mutare. We have discussed with the acting Town Clerk and we are awaiting to be told how we can help,” said Mupfumi.
Mutare based PSL side Manica Diamonds is using Gibbo Stadium in Chiredzi for its home games.
Acting Town Clerk Blessing Chafesuka confirmed that council has received receipt of how the business community intends to assist in renovating the condemned stadium.
“We have accepted the donations from the Mutare Business community although I cannot give you the full details before I engage these business people. We want to give them our feedback and the modalities that were accepted by Council. The direction we want to take this time is that we should not make the same mistake we made in the past.
“We were given a list of what we are supposed to renovate by the ZIFA ground inspection committee, chief among them is the state of the turf. So in short I can say Council accepted the offer from the business community in Mutare,” he said.
