GUTU– A nine year old boy from Bako Village under Chief Serima in Chatsworth drowned in Mutyizi River on Boxing Day after swimming in the deep ends of Mutyizi River, Masvingo Police Spokesperson Kudakwashe Dhewa has said.
Tinei Jepison failed to swim in the deep end of the river and drowned at around 2 pm and his body was retrieved from the reeds by his parents and other villagers.
Dhewa said Jepison went to swim in the company of an eight year old boy. While swimming Jepison went to the deep end of the river and drowned.
The other boy ran back to the village and informed Jepison’s parents who went down to the river with other villagers and retrieved Jepison’s body.
A Police report was made at Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Serima Base and postmortem was waived by Gutu Magistrate Mitchel Hapanavanhu.
Dhewa said communities should discourage children from swimming without life savers as they risk drowning.
