BIKITA – Shereni Irrigation scheme in Bikita is expected to produce 25 tonnes of wheat from a 10 h piece of land in Manyande Village under Chief Mkanganwi in Ward 10.
Agritex held a field day at the plot on Monday last week to demonstrate to other farmers the best methods in wheat production.
Bikita District Agritex Officer Norbert Chidhuza said the irrigation scheme is a beneficiary of the Presidential Winter Wheat Inputs scheme.
Chidhuza said the irrigation scheme is one of the best in Bikita and has a total area of 20h under cultivation with wheat taking up 10,32h.
The scheme benefits 43 farmers who own 0,4 hectares each.
Ward 10 Agricultural Extension Officer Godfrey Munanga said wheat must be grown in time to achieve a big yield.
He said planting was done from May using the broadcasting method.
He advised farmers to plant their crops early and follow good agronomic practice to achieve high yield.
