Bhaso, Zimsof conduct GBV awareness campaigns

MASVINGO-Batanai HIV and AIDS Services Organisation (Bhaso) and Zimbabwe Small Holder Organic Farmers’ Forum (Zimsof) have partnered to raise awareness of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and sexual harassment in rural areas.
The two Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) conducted one of their campaigns in the Topora area in Masvingo rural on Tuesday.
Bhaso health officer Presley Chikunguru told The Mirror on the sidelines of the campaign that they are sponsored by Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO).
The campaign was attended by traditional and church leaders, government department heads, villagers and health workers.
Chikunguru told the gathering that GBV affects both genders despite the focus being more on women.
“We want to discuss the causes of GBV and raise awareness on how to end this scourge and sexual harassment.
“The purpose is to eliminate all forms of GBV against women, men and children,” he said.
ZIMSOF Project Facilitator Christopher Chinyoka said the initiative aims at fighting GBV and raising awareness of sexual rights.
“We have many programmes in the province to teach farmers and people about sexual harassment and GBV. We are approaching traditional leaders and they will pass the information on to their people,” he said.
Chikunguru urged villagers to know their rights. He also said village heads must act on all sexual harassment and GBV cases to deter would-be offenders. He also urged them to desist from drug and substance abuse.
