MASVINGO–Berejena High School was the toast of the Catholic Secondary Schools Association (CASSA) choral and games competitions held at Gokomere two weeks ago when its teams rose to the occasion and won the best football and netball team awards.
The competition held under the theme: Enlarge the Space of Your Tent, brought together 17 Catholic secondary schools from Masvingo Diocese.
Masvingo Mirror crowned the joyous moment for Berejena by awarding the two teams, football and netball kits among other prizes from other donors.
The Mirror also gave prize money to two players from Berejena; Praise Chokuda and Gloria Nyenyesa who were adjudged the best soccer player and netballer of the tournament respectively.
The prizes were presented by Mirror Deputy General Manager, Elizabeth Mashiri and the Administrator, Trevor Nyagura respectively.
Praise told The Mirror that he was very happy to be selected as the best soccer player.
“I am happy with this achievement and I won for my school and my teammates because we worked as a team to win the trophy,” he said.
Gloria said that she is happy to be adjudicated the player netball player. She added that she is grateful to her teammates and coaches.
“I am happy to be this year’s best netball player. I am grateful to my teammates and coach for supporting me. We played as one and won the trophy and this is something to smile about,” she said.
Speaking during the handover of prizes, Mashiri said sports was as important as academics and students must give it their full effort. He said sports may however not be as rewarding in Zimbabwe as it is elsewhere hence local students always find themselves more connected to books.
Mashiri urged the girl child to aim higher and said the sky is the limit and her rise to the position of Deputy GM at the Mirror was a good example.
The event was attended by 17 secondary schools in the Masvingo Catholic Diocese and was conducted under the theme ‘Enlarge the space of your Tent’. Masvingo Catholic Diocese Education Secretary Fr Samson Mutsvanga was the guest of honour.
Berejena sports master Tafadzwa Ruzoma said they are proud to have won the tournament after failing to win the last two editions.
“We are happy as a school and as the coach I am proud considering that we had been on a losing streak for the previous two CASSA editions,” he said.
Silveira High however emerged as the champions of this year’s CASSA games, securing five gold medals in tennis for boys, tennis for girls, volleyball for boys won jointly with Gokomere, handball for girls, and handball for boys, as well as three silver medals and two bronze.
Gokomere High secured the second position with four gold medals in volleyball for girls, volleyball for boys jointly won with Silveira, chess for girls and choir.
