BEITBRIGDE- Beitbridge border post’s, US$300m modernisation is 70% complete ahead of schedule, Zimborders Consortium manager Nqobile Ncube has said.

He said this on Monday during a tour by the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Budget, Finance and Economic Development.

The project is in three phases which saw the construction of the commercial terminal completed under the first phase and launched in October last year. 

“Phase one is a commercial terminal completed on time in October last year. The second phase is the bus terminal also completed on time. The third phase is a private vehicle and pedestrian terminal, also expected to be completed by November 2022 and on time,” said Ncube.

He added that offsite works constitute a fire station for community beneficiation, reservoir tank, and the sewer oxidation ponds were completed and await the handover to Beitbridge Municipality. 

The plant and animal quarantine centre will be completed by August 31, 2022, and 220 housing units for border employees by May 30 2023.

The Committee, with the Defence, Home Affairs and Security Services Committee, visited the border post to appreciate the modernisation project. They also wanted to find out about measures that are in place to curb leakages of the country’s minerals.

The Budget Committee is chaired by Buhera Central MP Dr Matthew Nyashanu, whilst the Defence Committee is chaired by Chiredzi South MP, Retired Brigadier General Callisto Gwanetsa.

The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Development is the signatory to the 17 and half years Built Operate and Transfer (BOT) Concession between Zimbabwe and Zimborders Consortium.https://masvingomirror.com/
